 Created Baron Dalton of Forest and Frith January 1960. Born in Neath, Glamorgan 1887-1962. Rupert Brooke first met Hugh who was waiting on the Provosts steps on the first Sunday of term they came up to Cambridge, they became friends. It was Hugh who introduced Ben Keeling to Rupert Brooke. Privy Councillor 1940, MA Cambridge, Dr Science London, Dr Science Sydney, Dr Law (LL.D) Manchester, Labour MP for Camberwell (Peckham Division) 1924-1929, MP of Bishop Auckland Division 1929-1931, and 1935-1959.Later in life he was a leading Labour politician, Chancellor under Clement Attlee's 1945 government. His father had been the Canon of Windsor and a tutor of Queen Victoria's children. Books on Hugh Dalton, Ben Pimlott's Hugh Dalton or his autobiography 'Call Back Yesterday" Married 1914 Ruth Hamilton (Labour MP of Bishop Auckland Division Feb1929-May 1929) she was the daughter of T Hamilton Fox, they had one daughter who died. Educated Eton, Kings College Cambridge, London School of Economics. Served in WWI (Army Service Corp, then Royal Garrison Artillery) French and Italian Fronts, awarded Italian Medaglio al Valore Militare in 1917. Minister for Economic Warfare 1940, President Board of Trade 1942 during Churchill's war-time coalition. 1945-November 1947 he was Chancellor of the Exchequer he nationalized the Bank of England in 1946. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster 1948-1950. Published: With British Guns in Italy, Inequality of Incomes in Modern Communities, Principles of Public Finance, The Peace of Nations, Practical Socialism for Britain, Hitler's War, Call Back Yesterday 1953, The Fateful Years, High Tide and After 1962.
